The Bedford in Balham 7.30pm Sunday

Just a mini-update! Back in Manchester... waiting for supper to cook. Thinking about going to see some of the FutureEverything things that are going on... it's basically a mix between a music festival and a technology festival, so should be right up my street. Are any other Manchester people thinking of going to any of it?

l'd forgotten how much I like LiveJournal! I'm down in Devon for the weekend --- doing a songwriting course near Totnes. Currently in Exeter with Peter Farrie --- we used to collaborate on recording some songs!
It's really good to be back here again actually.. I'm often down in Somerset but rarely make it as far as Devon.
Haven't really had much of a chance to see Totnes this time... am hoping to come back down soon for longer (hopefully with Clare). Tomorrow, I'm doing a show (together with everyone else who's been on the songwriting course) at the Ariel Centre in Totnes. It starts at 7.30pm. It's been great, because it's given me an excuse / chance to right some songs again. Am really happy with the new song. The other people who are on the course have written some amazing things and we're all going to be playing at the show tomorrow... exciting stuff!
If anybody's in the Devon area, it'd be great to see people. It's notionally £4 on the door apparently, but (according to the organiser), it's free for people who are penniless!
Okay, I seem to remember making it a new year's resolution to update this more... and I really haven't done that. So maybe I should start now!

Happy new year everyone! (Thanks to @rebelfilms for nagging me to update :-) )
New year's Eve was really good. Went to a couple of parties in Chorlton... Today is my first day back at work for 2010.... Getting through a mountain of emails, then business as usual!
I'm presenting the unsigned show tonight 11pm-1am on AllFm.org (broadcasting in Manchester on 96.9FM).... and again next Monday evening, 11pm-1am. Lots of live guests in session, and unsigned tracks too. Should be fun...
I'm doing the sound engineering for a gig at Oddest Bar in Chorlton this coming Sunday (10th January). It features the excellent Gideon Conn, and is a free gig. Should be really good I think.

Hellooo! Am in my little office in Manchester, working late and going through my "important emails" folder. I have 148 left... I kid you not! Ahh well, it's good because I've got through most of my work-related stuff and am now able to go for the fun and/or music related things!
Off to see a gig in the Ruby Lounge in Manchester tonight... the "Handsome Family". Don't really know all that much about them, but they're being co-promoted by Humble Soul, which is a good thing. We're reviewing it for our radio show on All Fm...
Then on Thursday we're putting on Kate Rogers, who I think used to sing with Rae and Christian. It's at a cafe called Cup, in the Northern Quarter. There seems to be quite a buzz about that, which is good...
I did Guerrilla Busking on Friday with Single Cell, raising awareness of refugees who are waiting for the results of their appeals and in the meantime have no money, no support and aren't alowed to work. The event went great. Here's random pics from the whole day:
And Clare left for Russia on Saturday, which was sad. She is going for three months :-( So we moved out of our flat - packing up most of last week. And then yesterday I finished cleaning it all up, hired a WhizzGo car, and drove everything to my new place, which is in Chorlton --- am sharing it with three friends for three months. After that, Clare and I will look for another place!
And I'm going to go to Russia to see her very soon... hopefully June. Just need to sort out a tourist visa. Eek!

It's really good to read through my LJ friends page and see that, actually, most people are posting as much as ever. I'd kind of thought that for some reason after a few years, a lot of people would stop posting (like I kind of have... mostly, but not quite!)
So I'm going to try and update this a bit more--- will try and write another post soon before RebelFilms nudges me :-)
The music night I was involved in at Cup in Manchester went really well. The music was really nice, and we had James from the Brute Chorus DJing. It was quite hectic to start with (because the event kicked off at 6pm), but we got there, and it all went really smoothly!
See you soon!

It's been a really long time since I last posted... so I thought I'd do a really tiny update here.
All's good... still in Manchester, music's going well, and doing a radio show on All Fm (96.9 FM) each month, which is always really fun - especially because we do two live sessions each show and have some really great bands on.
Also involved with putting on various gigs still --- our next being at Cup Cafe (in the Northern Quarter of Manchester), on Monday 23rd March. We've got Kirsty McGee & The Hobopop Collective, plus Kreg Viesselman. The Brute Chorus are DJing. It starts really early (at 6pm) and finishes at 10. It's going to be great!

I've been bad and not updated my Livejournal for ages... Thanks, rebelfilms, for the nudge!
Came back from a week in Croatia on Saturday. That was really great. Very nice not to have the laptop with me and no computer access. We were sailing through the Cornati Islands, which are pretty remote. Lots of good meals out and loads of swimming.
Best bit was swimming at night in a little bay. There was this crazy thing called phosphorescence, which I'd heard about but never seen before. It really is incredible. As soon as you move in the water, all these little points of light appear around the part of you that's moving. So if you splash a bit, the whole sea seems to light up with little stars --- tiny, tiny points of light. It's some kind of microarganism in the water... I'm not entirely sure why they do it. Going to have to read up on it. Certainly an amazing experience, anyway.
Got back on Saturday... Plane to Manchester was almost two hours late, which would be fine except for that we'd booked another flight straight after to take me to Newquay for my aunt's 60th birthday party. We landed 40 mins before the next flight took off. It was a bit close -- I managed to get to checkin desk with 1 minute spare.
The party was fun. It was a surprise for my aunt. There was lots of music - my brother Alex and I played some songs (covers, which I don't normally really do - was a good experience). Also lots of food and drink. Got back to my parents' in Somerset at 4.30am in the morning (5.30am Croatian time, I guess).
Then spent 4 days in Somerset, working down there, before heading up to Manchester in time for Thursday evening. Was doing sound engineering / PA hire for a gig at Abode in Chorlton that night. Some really great people playing (all of whom I'd done sound for before, which I thought was quite random). On the bill were God's Little Eskimo, Lucy and the Caterpiller, and Gosamer Albatros. It was good to be involved with an event without actually playing in it or organising it. Also quite a few mates came down, which was good.
Yesterday pretty much spent all day working at my office in Manchester. Then went to meet Clare to give blood in the centre of Manchester. First time I'd ever done it (which is a bit rubbish, I know). Was fine. Chocolates and tea afterwards was good. Also, in the café bit at the blood place they had a copy of Holiday Villas Magazine, who I work for down in Somerset. Which is good to see. (Here's an online version the magazine, which I have just finished creating, coincidentally... one of the things I do as my day job!)
After that, we went to the Cornerhouse to pick up a T-shirt that Clare had won from them in a random film competition... But the people at the desk didn't know anything about it. Oops. We'll have to check back another time when they've actually been told about it!
Then we went drinking. Which is I think not what you're actually meant to do after giving blood. That was fun. And ate a big mexican meal in a place called Panama Hattie's... (eating in restaurants with puns in the title also isn't recommended, but this one is actually okay).
Wow - I actually did a LJ update. Excellent! I should do this more often! Hope everyone's well....

Sorry I've been so rubbish at posting lately. I've just seen a link saying "IM posting" --- that sounds interesting. Maybe I'll do that and post more regularly!
We're doing a show tonight at Kro Bar in Manchester, which features Jon Gomm who is really great.
I'm playing too, and we've got Samson and Delilah (Waverton Collective), Ragnhild (the Bee's niece) and Bleeding Hands
£3 in, gonna be good...
See you soon hopefully. Going to try and keep this more updated...
Off to New York and then Georgia, on Monday. Whee!

Ah I'm really not sticking very well to my New Year's resolution of updating LJ more :-) Ah well..... at least I've managed to update it in January anyway- just about!
Just been spending the last two days doing my tax return... Eeek!
Am promoting lots more nights in Manchester now. We have one tonight at the Carlton Club in Whalley Range... we've got LIsa Redford and also some of the Waverton Collective playing... .and, notably, beer is only £1.85 a pint (and wine £1.25)... it's every Thursday, from 8pm, £3 on the door. We always try and get 4 really good bands / acts so it's always a top night!
After that I be bimbling possibly over to Bury tomorrow to play at the Winelight Club, then on Sunday am playing down in Birmingham at the Sunflower Lounge (which is always fun!)
Hope all's well on the f'list.... am looking forward to coming back to LJ a bit sooner next time (next week, maybe?) :-)

Hey everyone! Wow, it's been a long time since I was on here! Just wanted to say happy Christmas to everyone. Thanks to rebelfilms for nudging me :-)
This should be a New Year's resolution I think - to get back into Livejournal!
Friday, May 11, 2007
We're doing a big gig thingummybob in the Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham tonight. I'm really looking forward to this one. I think it's going to be quite a good laugh somehow!

The Birmingham tomorrow -- we're hiring out the Sunflower lounge... Friday 11th May!

I'm really loving Atlanta.... I've met so many lovely people!
I played in a brewery today (Sweetwater Brewery)... 250 people - each of them had paid 6 bucks to get in, and then there was unlimited beer once inside. The beer is lovely too. I'm going to have to try and bring some of it back with me :-)

Running an acoustic night at Trof tonight (Wednesday) - songs for the bath tub... should be very good, and free!
Off to Atlanta, Georgia, in a week, to play some gigs. It's really crept up on me, that one! Madly rushing around trying to organize things...
Everything's madly hectic, but I had a lovely chilled weekend in Yorkshire with Clare.. If anyone's on facebook, some pictures are linked from my profile:
Just add as a friend! Going to do a really big proper update very soon!

Just went with Jez to Liverpool, as Sam / Get Cape.. was playing there. Was a good gig actually - the Academy was sold out but we had passes so that was cool. Briefly went to say hello to everyone afterwards and then headed back quite early.
The weekend was hectic... headed to Cambridge with Tom and Pete for fake-MA ceremony. I got my haircut instead of going to the ceremony, but was there for the evening meal - was a really great chance to catch up with my year group at uni. And no-one had really changed.
My brother Alex and his girlfriend Jen came to pick me up from the bar, and I stayed at theirs (well, Jen's Mum's) that night. Had a really huge roast dinner the next day, got lift back to Girton, then we drove back up to Manchester again... a lovely little trip! Watched The Prestige in the evening (Sunday night's been kind-of like film night here for a while). Clare came round too, so that was grand!
Playing in London on Wednesday - at Troy Bar in Hoxton... it's going to be fun - I haven't been playing in London for ages!
Saturday, March 17, 2007
... I think my new year's resolution should have been to keep a better journal, looking back on it... :-)
Right, I really am off to bed now!
After months and months of not logging in, I just wanted to say hello!
Manchester is great, as ever. I've just come back from a cheesy but actually *really* good night at a random club in Manchester... 60s and 70s soul. Nice! Bumped into Liam Frost and a few other mates. Was quite fun actually - haven't really been out to a club for ages!
Tomorrow (quite early... must get some sleep!) I'm heading to Sheffield with Clare.. I think we're going out in the evening, although not to the Leadmill, which I think is slightly overrated!
The nights that we're doing at Trof, Trof 2 and Fuel are going really well, though it's starting to get a bit hectic with 5 of them every month! The next one's on Wednesday at Trof though, and I'm really looking forward to that!
Earlier today I did a podcast interview about the nights and my music, which was a good laugh... dunno when it's going to appear, if at all!
My ears are ringing a bit from too much funky soul!
Just off to catch up on my friends page - whilst drinking a steaming mug of chai!
Tuesday, January 23, 2007
Hellooo... I haven't posted on this for ages, sorry! Not dead, just busy! Tis all good though - gigging in Liverpool tomorrow with the very good midget and giant (myspace.com/midgetandgiant)...
Also went to really great gig at Academy 2 on Saturday - was get cape, wear cape, fly. I know jeremy warmsley, the support, vaguely, so got a few guest list passes. It was quite cool to be at a big gig again. Then we went to big hands afterwards. I drank lots of rum. It was good though.
I've just seen this when googling for reviews. Oh dear!:

Wed, Dec 13th, 7pm
New York was hectic, but good... and actually, not too hectic - there was a lot of sitting in coffee shops. I quite liked that - we didn't really do any touristy things, but rather were quite spontaneous. I dread to think how much coffee and beer I drank.
One touristy thing we *did* do was to take the free ferry to Staten Island. The ride takes you past the Statue of Liberty, and you get great views of Manhattan. Of course, when you're actually *in* Manhattan you don't really get to see the skyline in the same way. Staten Island itself is a dump, but we wandered around and got some coffee in a little cafe there, before getting the ferry back. By which time the sun was setting and the skyline really did look as it does in films ("just as you imagine it, with skyscrapers and everything"...)
Our return flight left JFK at 8pm last night, arriving 7.30 in the morning UK time. For once they showed some (by plane standards) good films (Little Miss Sunshine & The Illusionist) and the flight was good. But Lisa is a very nervous flier and there was about 1 hour of turbulence - which I spent uttering reassuring words, whilst surreptitiously keeping an eye on the film. It did, however, mean I got to eat her breakfast croissant. And because she was drinking rum and coke to ease her nerves, I drank red wine, which goes well with croissants.
I was planning to stay awake all day, thinking this would be the best way to combat jet lag. Didn't happen though. I slept all afternoon.
I am now on the bus to see Clare - from New York to (Old) York. I'm getting the coach, coz it's as quick as the train and only £4. The coach driver just stopped the coach and asked everybody if they could hear that annoying squeeking noise. Nobody could. But now that he's set off again I can hear it loud and clear. And it *is* very annoying, though I doubt in a coach-breaking-down kindof a way.
Oooh... I'm the proud owner of a new guitar from New York. And it had its first taste of England today!
